Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (2024)

No Night Without Stars

Open your Journal and select the main quest No Night Without Stars. To start the Murder on Eridanos DLC, talk to ADA and choose, “You mentioned an aetherwave drama? I’d like to see it.”

You view an interesting film-noir video with a surprising conclusion. Afterwards, you receive a communication from the authorities on Eridanos. Exhaust the conversational choices and agree to investigate the murder. This unlocks:

This concludes the main quest No Night Without Stars and starts the next main quest The Last Role of Halcyon Helen.

The Last Role of Halcyon Helen

The planet, Eridanos, is now available as a destination. Travel there. Disembark with Felix and Parvati. Go forward. You will automatically find yourself in conversation with the Bellhop. Exhaust the dialog options. The conversational choices do not matter.

You are not required to follow the bellhop—you can explore the landing pad area and loot if you want to—but he’s going in the direction you need to go. As he goes down two flights of stairs, you’ll find The Dissident Queen, Chapter 1 on the bellhop desk. Read it. It’s not tied to an achievement but provides lore that makes untangling the murder mystery more interesting.

Turn left around the bellhop desk. You find yourself in a courtyard. Proceed toward the quest marker and transition to the Grand Colonial Hotel creating an autosave. Once inside, talk to Bellhop Norville again. He’s on the far side of the room in front of the elevator. Pass a dialog skill check of about 65 to learn about the Prophet of Profitability. You now have a new main quest, The Productivity Queen which we’ll investigate a little later on.

Go behind the elevator and cross the police cordon. Give Constable Keene a wide berth so you don’t initiate a conversation and go to the back left of the room. On the podium, pick up one or two bottles of Vodka Spectrum Brown—it’s not stealing.

Vodka Spectrum Brown has a net negative effect on mind attributes. Thus, it’s very helpful in dumbing yourself down. We'll need to do that for the Sunburn achievement. Leave the rest of the Spectrum Brown bottles in case you inadvertently lose the one(s) you have.

One of the tasks we will be doing is collecting all the flavors of Spectrum Vodka. You'll recall the earlier comments to collect as many flavors as possible. Accordingly, you probably have the more common flavors already—red, orange, yellow, and green. If so, put them in your inventory.

If you don’t have one or more of these colors, we’ll pick them up before you need them. However, Spectrum Vodka Brown is the one flavor that does not count towards the task.

Talk to Constable Keene. Dr. Goodnight gives you the Discrepancy Amplifier, a forensic tool. Equip it in a weapon slot. Press LT to zoom in on the body. Footprints next to the body become visible press X to analyze them. This unlocks the achievement:

  • No Longer Clueless

    Used the Discrepancy Amplifier.

After some dialog, pass a Perception check to learn Helen was in the Orchards before she died.

This concludes the main quest The Last Role of Halcyon Helen and initiates the main quest: A Momentary Taste of Purpleberry.

A Momentary Taste of Purpleberry

Use the discrepancy analyzer again near the letter B next to the body and exhaust the conversation. Talk to Constable Keene again to learn about Black Hole Bertie and a special weapon, the Needler. You’ll initiate the main quest, Prince of Tossball. The Needler is one of three weapons we need to find for an achievement.

Talk to Dr. Goodnight and exhaust the conversation. One of the dialog choices has a technical check that can be passed with a Medical, Engineering, or Science skill of 105 or so. It’s not essential you pass it but it will reward a small bonus XP.

Talk to the concierge, just to the right of where you came in. He’ll give you the penthouse keycard. Exhaust all dialog options making sure you get access to the VIP Guest Floor.

Before going up the elevator, talk to Bellhop Norville again and exhaust the new dialog choices. Then, use the elevator and select Bring me to the Penthouse Suite.

As you enter, note the terminal to your left. Use it to contact Administrator Ludovico. He will give you access to the Orchards.

The room on the right side of the penthouse map contains a workbench. On the table is the unique named helmet, Spatial Acuity Sensor. It’s got Perception +1, Interactable Highlight Range +2.5, and Bonus to Headshot/Weakspot damage.

On the right side of this room, as you enter, is an investigation board. You can use it, in Sherlock Holmes fashion, to review all aspects of the case.

On the far side of the room is a portable phonograph. Pick it up to listen to Black Hole Bertie’s Message. You now have a new category in the Codex tab of your journal: Eridanos Audio Logs. These logs count towards the 20 required for the Peril on Gorgon Good Listener Achievement if you haven’t gotten it yet.

In this room is a second terminal. Read the messages to learn a bit more about The Productivity Queen. If you hadn’t previously initiated the quest by talking to Bellhop Norville, this would have kicked it off.

A little later, an intruder dressed up as the Rizzo’s mascot will appear in this room. Refer to the Prince of Tossball section regarding him. You can leave him alone until you are ready to tackle that main story mission.

Use the elevator in the room. You can go to the lobby, the VIP Guest Floor, or exit the Grand Colonial. Choose to go to the VIP floor. Take Felix and Parvati with you to help with lockpick skill checks. Loot the entire floor.

Talk to the auto-mechanical, Burbage-3001. Exhaust the dialog choices. You can take whatever you want from his room—he does not consider it stealing. Talk to Spencer Woolrich and exhaust all his dialog options. After talking to him, he will turn his back on you. Pickpocket him to get the Strangely Worded Letter, a quest item.

Talk to Zeke Hannigan and exhaust his dialog. Steal the Spectrum Vodka in his room taking care he doesn’t see you. There are two flavors in his room and a third in another room. The 3 flavors on the VIP floor are:

Spectrum Vodka Black: Flavor 1 of 8

Spectrum Vodka Violet: Flavor 2 of 8

Spectrum Vodka Indigo: Flavor 3 of 8

The Discrepancy Amplifier will alert at:

  • A wooly cow
  • Footprint before a safe
  • A burnt letter
  • A bottle on a table in Spencer’s room

Other items of note on the floor include:

  • Burbage-3001 Autographed Photo
  • DANGER CLOSE by Spencer Woolrich, Act 7, Scene 15
  • Black Hole Bertie's Signed Tossball
  • Signed Tossball Stick—A unique weapon

Once you have thoroughly searched the VIP quarters, making sure you used the Discrepancy Amplifier whenever it alerted, you will have satisfied the Search Bertie’s Room task under the Prince of Tossball main mission.

You conclude that the emergency meeting point is at the Meteorological Control Station. We could have done this later; but the vodka will come in handy for our current investigations.

Leveling Consideration: You will level up several times during the Eridanos DLC. Use the skill points to raise your unadjusted Medical Skill to 60 if it is not there yet. After we finish the Eridanos DLC, the unadjusted Medical skill of 60, though not required, will make a pesky achievement much easier.

Make A Momentary Taste of Purpleberry the active quest. Use the elevator and choose to exit the Grand Colonial. turn right and follow the marker heading towards the bridge to the orchards. Before you cross it, talk to Lillie Vargas. Exhaust the dialog to initiate the side quest Strange Disappearance of a Watchman. Talk to her again for a few more choices.

Cross the bridge. At the bridge’s midpoint, the Discrepancy Amplifier alerts you. Investigate the body of a guard to learn about the danger from marauders. Kill the enemies—marauders and canids—and search the area.

Look on the ground to the left of the workbench to find a Joch Plasma Rifle 3.0. This is a level 36 long gun and its max charge shot is extremely powerful. Plasma is less effective than corrosion against armored enemies. However, unlike the marauders we just engaged, many of the enemies on Eridanos are unarmored, fleshy enemies and vulnerable to plasma. It is, thus, of value to add the weapon to your loadout and level it up as much as you can. I still prefer the conventional shot of the Deadeye III to a charged shot. So I, personally, do not use the Plasma Rifle. Nevertheless, the power of the max charge shot against fleshy enemies is noteworthy.

Inside the hut, pick up the portable phonograph and listen to SLUG Crew C Work Log. This advances the Watchman side quest—you must now investigate Room A2 in the lower level of the Grand Colonial.

Search the ground surrounding the platform to find a hole where the marauders made their hideout. Inside, find the unique weapon, Frigidariator, with the very rare cold damage type.

Cross the remainder of the bridge. You get XP for completing the quest task, Travel to the Purpleberry Orchards. Talk to Sidney Moyano at the Purpleberry Nut Hut. Exhaust the conversational options and purchase a golden ticket.

If you haven't already, you will soon encounter new enemies. Hosts are humans who have been infected by parasites. They are maniacally happy. There are also large parasite spawnlings. You will encounter hundreds of each type in the game. Killing any combination of 50 of these hosts and parasites will unlock:

  • Put Out of Their Happiness

Killed 50 Infected Humans or Parasites.

Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (16)

1 guideGuide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (17)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (18)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (19)

Talk to DeWitt Hathaway in the other building. Exhaust the conversational options. This initiates the faction quest: Faithful to Thee, Rizzo’s, In Our Fashion.

As a minor point of interest, you can find the corpse of an Unlucky Groundskeeper to the right of the path. Next to him is a duplicate copy of The Dissident Queen, Chapter 1 that you found earlier.

Return to the path and go a short ways to find the current Groundskeeper, Jacob Yarbough. Talk to him and exhaust the conversational options. You learn that Helen met with Dr. Liora Blossom in the Orchards the night she was killed.

Next to him and a piece of farm machinery, the Discrepancy Amplifier alerts. Activate it to investigate Helen’s footprints. Follow them. On your way, you discover Purpleberry Processing. Go inside and check the right side. The Discrepancy Amplifier Alerts. Investigate. This is the Fried Console you must inspect for the faction quest.

Before you follow the footprints, take the path to the right and go to Nursery Storage. Talk to Anna Summers, the intern—an optional part of the faction quest. You learn that you need to gain access to the exterminator auto-mechanical terminal. Loot the chests to find:

Spectrum Vodka Green: Flavor 4 of 8

Return to the point where you took the right hand turn. Continue to follow Helen’s footprints. They enter a door on one side of an enclosure, the Conservatory, and come out the other side.

Enter and find Carter Reynolds inside. Pickpocket him to acquire the quest item, Rizzo’s Spectrum Original, the first Rizzo’s Spectrum ever made. Talk to him. You learn Helen was in the RR&DD Labs. Inside a chest, you’ll find:

Spectrum Vodka Orange: Flavor 5 of 8

Mindful of the enemies, continue to follow the footsteps until you discover the Wrecked Picnic. Just before you get there, pop in to the Exterminator Automech Depot. Hack the terminal and recall the auto-mechanicals as part of the faction quest. If you can’t hack the terminal, we’ll discover an access card shortly.

At the wrecked picnic, take RR&DD Labs Security Access Card and analyze a broken tossball stick with the discrepancy amplifier. On the picnic blanket, you’ll find another bottle of Spectrum Vodka Black and:

Spectrum Vodka Red: Flavor 6 of 8

It is highly likely you already have Spectrum Vodka Red. It is the most common flavor. The first occurrence is in the captain’s cabin on the unreliable. Enemies in the orchard not uncommonly drop it as loot when killed.

With your back to the picnic blanket, go forward and find the Exterminator Automech Terminator Access Card next to a Rizzo’s Caution sign. This is the card Anna lost. If you weren’t able to hack the terminal, go back to the Automech Depot and recall the auto-mechanicals with the access card.

Make the Faction Quest, the active task. Follow the quest marker and Investigate the Dead Saplings with the Discrepancy Amplifier. Return to Anna and inform her of the results. Finally, report the results of your three investigations to Hewitt.

I chose not to spill the beans on how Anna’s good intentions led to catastrophic results. I used Persuade to negotiate a compromise between SLUG & Rizzo’s to complete the faction quest. Other choices would have worked as well.

CAUTION: We’re going to do The Puzzlehedges of Forking Paths side quest. It can be finicky and does not always activate the way it should, gypping you out of a lot of XP. Fortunately, the simplest way is the most reliable. Speak to only one of the 3 people:

  1. In the center, Samuel Huttes, the lawyer
  2. To the right, Emily Zimmerman, the entrepreneur
  3. To the left, Salina Navarre, the Collector

Pictured below is Samuel Huttes. You run into him right at the entrance to the maze. I did not talk to him but abandoned the conversation and only approached him so I could take the screenshot so you could orient yourself.

The choice is completely up to you. The quest will complete the same regardless of who you decide on. I went to the left of Samuel Huttes and chose Salina Navarre, selecting the dialog option to give her the Spectrum Original bottle. I thought she was the most deserving. More importantly, near her, on a table is:

Spectrum Vodka Blue: Flavor 7 of 8

Once you speak to the person you chose AND give the person the Rizzo’s Spectrum Original you pickpocketed earlier, you initiate and complete The Puzzlehedges of Forking Paths side quest. It is now safe to talk to the other people if you desire but you do not need to.

You can also solve the maze to get a certificate of completion that gets you a 5% discount from Rizzo vendors. Frankly, the juice is not worth the squeeze. Realistically, the only reason we needed to come to the maze was to get the rare blue Spectrum Vodka.

There is, by the way, a much more elaborate way to do the side quest. It involves a lot of back and forth and solving the maze. But this way gets you the XP with minimal effort.

You’ll find the groundkeeper’s shack at the end of the path on the left side of the map. You’ll find another bottle of Spectrum Vodka Indigo and The Dissident Queen, Chapter 1 - Cont. for some lore.

Resume the Taste of Purpleberry main quest and follow the quest marker towards the Rizzo’s RR&DD Labs now that you have the keycard. Use the intercom on the left and exhaust the conversational options with Dr. Blossom. She needs the lab safe before she will agree to help you.

You can kill the enemies but, since many were Dr. Blossom’s colleagues before they were infected, I took the kinder, gentler route. Go up the elevator. Turn right while crouching. The first door is barred so use the obstacles in the hall to hide from the two enemies. Sneak past them and turn right at the intersection staying out of sight.

Enter the door to your right. Stay to your right as you make your way down the map. Again, use obstacles to stay hidden from the enemies. Enter a hole in the wall to the room with the barred door you passed. Use the terminal to humanely make the enemies unconscious (but alive) with the sedative gas.

You now have the run of the place and can loot it freely including an extra bottle of Spectrum Vodka Violet. When you’re ready, follow the quest marker. No matter how quick or slow you were, you are too late to save Dr. Blossom from a mysterious assailant. Use the Amplifier to analyze the body. The Amplifier also alerts to inform you the assailant escaped through the vents.

Use the lab terminal next to Dr. Blossom’s window. You discover a file was deleted. Then, access the terminal in the center of the room. You initiate the task At the End of the Spectrum.

Since we are playing on supernova, it’s best to send companions back to the ship. The upcoming enemies are wasp hordes that home in on your companions even if you take precautions to keep them safe. So, discretion is the better part of valor to keep your companions alive.

Exit the facility. Your goal is a terminal in a shed (bottom left of the map). You can go there directly and use the terminal to stop the threat. Nevertheless, you get an extra reward if you do the optional task: Deal with Waspquito Swarms by destroying all the swarms.

Whereas companions are very vulnerable to them on supernova, you shouldn’t find the wasps much of a challenge. At any rate, whether you exterminate the pests or not, use the terminal to resolve the threat. You’ll find the last flavor of vodka in the shed with the terminal:

Spectrum Vodka Yellow: Flavor 8 of 8

Return to RR&D. Now that you have all 8 flavors, the center terminal will unlock the container. Pick up:

Science Weapon 1 of 3: Spectrum Gatling

Go to the penthouse and report to Ludovico. During the conversation, he informs you that Dr. Goodnight has finished Helen’s autopsy. This pertains to The Man Who Chafed mission which we’ll be doing a little later. If you tried to start this mission earlier, Dr. Goodnight would have told you that she was still busy with the autopsy and you would have been unable to proceed.

Prince of Tossball

Make Prince of Tossball the active mission. Put on the Chimaera armor for a boost in dialog skills and a helmet that gives an Intimidate +5 bonus. Go into the room on the left side of your penthouse map. You should find an intruder dressed up as the Rizzo’s Ranger Mascot.

If there's no intruder, exit the hotel, fast travel to your ship, sleep 6 hours, and return to the penthouse. You should now find the intruder.

Use [Intimidate 45] Give me one reason why I shouldn’t kill you. He’ll say he was looking for a message at the behest of Black Hole Bertie. Choose the [Lie] option. The mascot asks to me him later at the Pilothouse. Answer [Intimidate 45 Tell me what you know, or they’ll have to rinse your remains out of that mascot outfit.

He runs off—you can’t stop him. As he’s scooting away, he repeats you should meet him at the pilothouse.

Note that you could have killed him at any time before you caused him to run off. You would have found a note from Bertie substantiating his story. This does not botch the mission but it’s a little simpler and cleaner this way.

Use the elevator in the room. We'll need a companion for an upcoming achievement. I like to take Parvati and Felix for their lockpicking and persuasion boosts. Choose to exit the Grand Colonial. Make sure Prince of Tossball is still the active mission. Mindful of enemies, follow the quest marker to the Meteorological Control Station.

At the halfway point across the bridge, Amita Ray, a vendor sells the unique armor. Concierge Livery, 3rd Class. It’s pricey but attractive in that it provides a Personality +1 bonus thus increasing the values of both charm and temperament. Additionally, it provides Sneak +10.

Crossing the second half of the bridge, you find yourself on a plaza. On the far side of the plaza, take a right down some stairs. Follow the path around to the right. You’ll see a pinwheel in the ground next to a camp site. Pick it up—it’s a quest item.

When you enter the Meteorological Control Station, the Discrepancy Amplifier will alert. Investigate the body and, after that, a bottle. The two uses of the Amplifier provide clues and complete the quest tasks Travel to the Meeting Point and Search the Land Complex for Clues.

Hack the Meteorological Observation Terminal upstairs (skill check around 60). Once you have gained access, hack the unofficial logs. While you’re in the station, pick up the Vending Machine Power Cables—they are a quest item.

When you exit the station, go down some stairs on the side into a grassy area. On the ground, next to a bin (don’t steal its contents) and a large metal plate, pick up Automech Scrap—it’s a quest item.

Enter the largest building. You’ll transition to the Navigation Deck, creating an auto-save. Open the door and check the terminal to the front left, learning about the Pteroray trap. Go up the short staircase and check the terminal on the podium—Phaeton. This initiates the faction quest, PHAETON's Monster.

,

PHAETON’s Monster

Make it active. Go down the steps to the right of Phaeton to a landing. On the landing, clear the table, picking up the SporkNForks—they are quest items. Continue down the steps to floor 4/5. Take a right at the bottom and walk all the way to the other side.

Talk to Thelbert Wolcott to initiate the task Pteroray Trap. You can give him the items you’ve collected so far. I chose not to. We’ll pick up the last remaining item shortly.

Loot the rest of the floor making sure to pick up the Half-Melted Battery—a quest item. It’s in the bottom left-hand corner of your map. Of note is the unique, named item Rizzo's Rangers Hacker Uniform—a good piece of armor for melee players. Take the elevator in the bottom center of your map to floor 3/5. There are enemies, including a mega-canid, on this floor.

Mindful of enemies, turn right, go through the door, and follow the quest marker to pick up a Gyroscopic Alignment Key for Phaeton. Continue to go in the direction of the quest marker. You are likely to run into the mega-canid. At the marker, talk to Mabel. She is reticent and you’ll have to pass a dialog skills check.

From here, you can either follow Mabel’s directions—the safer approach over the catwalks—or make your own way on the regular floors. The latter provides better rewards. If you go your own way, make your way to the bottom left of the Floor 3/5 map. Then, work your way right and up to an elevator in the middle of the floor. This takes you to the lowest level.

Exiting the elevator, you can climb ladders on the left and right of you. The left ladder leads to a narrow platform with the unique, named, melee weapon, Brontide, stuck in a dead body. Make your way, carefully, to the top of the map killing the 3 mega-canids on your way.

At the top middle of the map, take the elevator up one floor. Talk to Mabel. Then, use the terminal for the Gyroscope Axial Realignment Procedure.

Instead of returning to the elevator you took, unbar the door leading to a second elevator in the upper middle of the map. This will take you all the way back to Floor 4/5. Unbar the door and go to the upper left corner of the map.

Report to Thelbert and give him all the components he asked for. He says he needs one more part—a pinwheel. Fortunately, we picked it up as soon as we got to the Pilothouse. Give it to him to conclude the task. The rewards include the named, unique handgun, Force Magnum.

Go up one floor and talk to Phaeton. He confirms all is in order and the faction quest successfully concludes with very lucrative rewards.

Ensure Prince of Tossball is the active mission. The next task is to meet with Bertie at the spaceport cantina. Fast travel back to the ship. Follow the marker to the terminal. It connects you to Sedrick who gives you access to the Piraeus Spaceport.

Cross the bridge and enter. It’s a transition point that creates an auto-save. As soon as you are inside, crouch and take out as many of the ‘mysterious assailants’ as you can before they notice you. Had you proceeded, they would have attacked without provocation. Search their bodies and find a hit note—a quest item. You learn The Marketeer is behind the attack.

Enter Dry Goods & Sundry just ahead. Talk to the barkeeper. He’s The Marketeer, real name Joseph Dempsy. Exhaust the conversation and trade with him if you want. Note that you can pick up the Spectrum Vodka on the counter without it being considered stealing.

There is going to be some mildly tricky dialog related to an achievement. Accordingly, it is worthwhile to have an insurance save. Pop in and out of the Spaceport to generate an auto-save. After you save, head downstairs and talk to Bertie who is not well disguised.

During the questioning, the options do not matter but it's best to be as skeptical as possible. After several questions, Bertie will say, "I don’t wanna tell you. I’ll get in trouble."

This is the trigger that will lead to the option of choosing a companion to be a bad cop. If you've followed the WT to include Parvati and Felix, you will have the following two dialog choices along with a couple of others:

--What do you think, Parvati? Up for a little "good inspector, bad inspector"?

--Okay, Felix, you're bad inspector. Just like in the serials.

Choose a dialog option that makes the companion a bad inspector. If you pick someone other than Ellie, the companion will be somewhat reticent. Here, Parvati is a nice person and doesn't like to be a bad inspector. Felix is a fan of Bertie and doesn't want to be hard on him.

Do not let the companion stop, even if asked. Encourage the companion to continue as the bad inspector and make sure you do not pick a dialog option that has you interrupt the companion.

If the companion does not conclude the bad cop questioning, the achievement will not pop. Felix makes the worse bad cop but, for that reason, it’s the most interesting. He’s not difficult provided you do not allow him to back out. When the companion successfully completes the bad cop questioning, you unlock:

  • Mutt And Jeff

Asked a companion to be the Bad Inspector.

Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (31)

1 guideGuide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (32)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (33)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (34)

If the conversation finishes without the achievement popping, make note of what aborted the bad cop routine. Then, load the insurance save and make choices that allow the companion to finish the bad cop act. Nearby, talk to Dash Whitlock to initiate the side quest The Two Rogues.

Go to Orick leaning against a crate on the side of Buy-a-Bunk 5. Exhaust the conversational options about Bertie. This satisfies the requirements for the mission’s optional task Confirm Bertie’s Alibi.

While you’re at the Buy-a-Bunks, hack (or lockpick) unit 2. Inside, find a SLUG Worker Identity Cartridge for your holographic projector. This allows you to go into the restricted areas without being challenged and/or attacked.

Note there is a ladder on the side of Dry Goods & Sundry. Climb it and go through some ductwork to find a hidden armory. Loot it and return.

Make the Two Rogues active. Go to the constabulary. Talk to Cassidy and use Persuade. Go to the back and find Maria Keene’s body. Use the Amplifier to find out more. Find the access card to the terminal and read the messages.

Then go to the Harbormaster. Exhaust the dialog options with Sedrick upstairs. This is the Lord of Blight main quest. Use the Amplifier in two locations. As a minor point, pick up The Dissident Queen, Chapter 3.

Go to the shipping yard. This is a restricted area so you’ll need the SLUG Worker ID cartridge you got earlier. At the very back, inside a recessed area, you’ll find the smuggled cargo. Return to Cassidy who tells you to give it to Joseph Dempsy (the Marketeer). Go to Dry Goods & Sundry and turn in the smuggled goods. Dempsy will take you behind the bar. This is the hidden armory you looted earlier. Finally, return to Dash to report.

Return to the Penthouse Suite. Use the terminal to talk to Ludovico. Make sure you do NOT select the option, I know who killed Halcyon Helen.

Do NOT start An Unfinished Accusation until you unlock the Interrogo Totus achievement.

You begin it when you talk to Ludovico and choose the option, ”I know who killed Halcyon Helen.”

This advances the story towards the end game, but you lock yourself out of the achievement if you do so before completing all investigations.

For that reason, make sure you investigate the following suspects by completing their associated quests—the specific order of quest completion does not matter:

Suspect

Quest

Bertie

Prince of Tossball

Spencer Woolrich

The Man Who Chafed

The Prophet

The Productivity Queen

Sedrick

Lord of Blight

I tailored my dialog to be as favorable to Bertie as possible. Make your own choices—they don’t matter. This concludes Prince of Tossball.

Make Strange Disappearance of a Watchman active. Take the elevator to the lobby. You may want to go without companions—we’ll be fighting a mega-creature though not a particularly challenging one. With your back to the elevator, turn left and go down the stairs.

Follow the quest marker to room A2. Use the Discrepancy Amplifier to discover the floor plate is loose. Press X to examine it and find the A2 keycard. Use it on the door to find Evan’s corpse. Use the Discrepancy Amplifier to investigate and conclude the task Search Room A2.

Search the other A block rooms. You can’t get into room A3 but you hear someone asking for help. Go around in the aisle between the A and B blocks. Enter a vent behind room A3 and discover a corpse and a portable phonograph. The plea for help was the audio log.

Check your floor 1/3 map. Enter the door on the bottom right of the map. Open a locked container (skillcheck around 60) to find the room B1 Keycard. Loot the B and C blocks using the Discrepancy Amplifier if prompted. You can see an oversized sprat through a window between rooms C2 and C3.

This is a mega-creature, Sprat of Unusual Size (S.O.U.S.). Go through the vent in room C3 and kill it. Exit through the vent on the other side into room C2. Unbar the door and exit.

Exit the Grand Colonial and follow the quest marker to Amelia. Exhaust the conversation. Finally, report back to Lillie Vargas to complete the side quest.

The Man Who Chafed

Make The Man who Chafed active. Inside the Grand Colonial, follow the quest marker to floor 3/3 and talk to Dr. Goodnight. Exhaust the conversational choices. The victim had been poisoned although that was not the cause of death.

Go to the VIP floor to talk to Spencer who, apparently, was also a victim of non-lethal poisoning. Earlier, we had used the Amplifier to inspect a bottle in Spencer’s room and had discovered remnants of foreign substances in an empty bottle.

Spencer accuses the chef, Anwar. Go to the lobby and follow the quest marker to the kitchen. Use the Discrepancy Amplifier on the stove. Pickpocket Anwar to find a self-encouragement note and then talk to him.

Outside the Grand Colonial, follow the quest marker to the Wilderness Exploitation Reserve to find Owens dead. Search his corpse. Optionally, loot the surrounding area. Then go to the Piraeus Spaceport and follow the marker to the Constabulary.

Ask Deputy Wine-Taster 306-B about the kitchen security footage. Pass an engineering skill check to avoid a 500 bit bribe. Go into inventory and look at the kitchen security footage under quest items. It incriminates Spencer. Return to the VIP floor and confront him. Dialog choices don’t matter.

Return to the penthouse and report to Ludovico. Choices don’t matter. I lied for extra XP and fingered Owens.

Take the elevator and exit the Grand Colonial. Go to the pool and exhaust the conversational choices with Dolph McAllister.

Make the following side quest active:

The Pool Where Horror Dwelt

Scan the pool with the Discrepancy Amplifier to scan the pool. Go to the right side of the pool and press X to examine the filter. This completes the task Examine the Pool. Go back to Dolph and complete the additional dialog choices including an optional science check if your skill is high enough.

Follow the quest marker to the Sun Parlor & examine the Rizzo’s Employee Journal at the marker. The last paragraph refers to a note in a different handwriting about a business opportunity.

You should have two quest markers. Follow the one to the balcony and talk to the note’s author, Donovan Matthas. He’s a Spacer's Choice industrial saboteur who wants to ‘wreak’ the pool.

Return to the Sun Room. At the terminal, mix whatever is in the vats. It ends up being an unknown substance. Back at the pool press X at the marker to insert pool chemical.

Dolph says, “Is that supposed to be bubbling?” Don’t talk to him. Instead, go to Donovan. He rewards you and the side quest is marked complete. Nevertheless, go to the sun room and use the terminal.

This time create the right formula—the one written on the blackboard:

  • Blue Water Coloring #422
  • Chlorinsol
  • Hydrogenated De-foamer

That means you have to use the left vat lever to change the number to 1, the middle lever to 5, and the right lever to 4. When you mix the chemicals you should be notified you have “gained pool cleaner.”

Back at the pool—there is no marker because the quest is ‘complete’—insert the pool chemical where you did earlier. Dolph will say, “The water’s clearing up.” He will also give you the side quest reward which, in addition to XP & bits, provides you with the SLUG Storeroom Key.

This is the Storeroom you find if you go in the side entrance closest to the Sun Room or if you take one of the exits from the lowest level. You probably passed by the SLUG Storeroom when doing the watchman quest.

The side quest is designed so you only have to satisfy Dolph or Donovan. However, because the cleaner fixes the problem that Donovan pays you to create, you can have your cake and eat it too.

The Productivity Queen

Make the Productivity Queen active. Take Felix & Parvati with you unless you can pass high level (about 110) lockpick skill checks without them. Cross the bridge to the Wilderness—this is the one to the left of the Sun Room that we went halfway across to find Bellhop Owens. This time, cross it all the way. You’ll have some canids to deal with at the end.

Go up the elevator and forward a little ways to LEGAL Hunting Supplies. Talk to Mildred Lenox at the counter to get a very simple side quest: Lost Little Milkmech. You have to find the lost auto-mechanical, Betty. Make the side quest active and kill the canids at the marker. Note that one of them is a mega-canid. Betty will return on her own. Go back to Mildred to get your reward that includes:

Science Weapon 2 of 3: Udder Buddy

Optional Task—Quick & Easy for a Relatively Small Reward: Talk to either Lawrence McLaughlin or Isabella Essary standing together in a small shack just past LEGAL Hunting Supplies. They want you to recover room keys from 4 corpses to conceal culpability in their deaths. Accept. You initiate the task I'll Not Ask for Guests. Make it active.

The four locations are marked on the map. One location is just behind the shack where you accepted the task. It’s guarded by canids including a mega-canid. Make sure you search around the right-most location on your map to find Last Words of Howard A. Kinsella. This gives you the [Lie] dialog option when you return to the task-givers. I opted for the kinder approach and returned the keys.

SPOILER: Lie option

*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

Optional Faction Quest—Quick & Easy for a Decent Reward: Turn left into a river behind Lawrence & Isabella and follow it through a tunnel. Go up the left side of your map. You discover an Abandoned Hut where there is a unique, named melee weapon, The Clapper, propped against an overturned table. Just above it on the map, you discover the Hermit’s Cabin. Exhaust the conversation with Cyrus Wahlgren who lives there with his non-hostile pet primal, Cal.

You initiate the faction quest, Your Primal Heart. Make it active. Go back the way you came and talk to Victoria Foxworth. If you have followed the same sequence as this guide, she’s just past where you emerged from the tunnel. Otherwise, she is in Rizzo’s Abandoned Bunker—a main story location. Either way, the quest marker will direct you to her.

You can side with either faction. Siding with Victoria is less messy and you get positive Rizzo rep points (for allowing them to continue to exploit the wilderness). Siding with Cyrus ends in bloodshed and you take quite a hit in Rizzo negative rep.

I sided with Victoria and passed a Persuade skill check to get his deed. (You could kill him & Cal but, if you’re willing to shed blood, killing Victoria & her cohort(s) seems to be the better choice). Give the deed to Victoria on condition that she allow Cyrus & Cal to live in peace.

Make sure The Productivity Queen is active. Follow the marker to Abandoned Rizzo's Bunker. Loot the place before going to the objective marker in the large room on the far side.

Exhaust conversational options with Aliyah Mason. She’ll tell you The Prophet of Profitability dragged what looked to be a human body into the Wilderness. Read the messages on the terminal. Go into the prophet’s tent and examine the herbs when the Amplifier alerts.

Exhaust the dialog options with the prophet. Investigating the herbs and reading the terminal before talking to the Prophet give additional dialog choices.

Exit the way you came in and take a left. The Amplifier alerts several times as you follow and analyze footprints. You end up at some marks in the dirt in the shape of a body. Analyze them with the Amplifier.

You are now prompted to return to the prophet. Enter the bunker but don’t go directly to her. Instead, take a left when you enter and go all the way to the back of the room and down the stairs. Find Geological Survey Notes next to a dead body. Pick it up.

Check the two terminals—one behind a locked door with a skill check around 60. Then, go down the elevator in the last room. You enter a cave complex with enemies including 3 mega-canids. They are not too much of a challenge, even on supernova, because you can always pop back up the elevator to evade them and can pick them off one or two at a time.

VERY IMPORTANT: To the right as you exit the elevator, find Parasite Egg Pod. This is a quest item for a future main story mission. Picking up now, before it’s designated by a quest marker, will save you a lot of time especially since you are on supernova and can’t fast travel. Also, find Geological Survey Notes on the right side of the big room and another Geological Survey Notes in the small room to the left that leads to a dead end.

Exit the far end of the cave complex back onto the Eridanos surface. This is a transition that creates an auto-save. There are quite a few mantisaurs. Again, you can simplify the challenge by popping back into the caves where the mantisaurs can’t follow.

After killing the enemies, go straight a short ways and talk to Virgil Henderson. You initiate The Caves of Zeal task. You can, immediately, complete it by handing over the 3 survey notes you picked up for a modest reward.

Look at the map. With your left side hugging the right side of the map, walk downwards. You come across a camp infested with a number of mantisaurs. Kill them.

Open a locked shed—skill check around 105. Inside, find the Exploration Authority Suit. This is an exceptional piece of armor for an engineering bonus of 15. If you have the armor master perk, this will give you an engineering bonus of 30. We have a high engineering skill check later in the game. It’s in the penthouse where we cannot rely on companions to boost our skills.

Return to the bunker and talk to the prophet. Dialog choices don’t matter. You have determined she is not the murderer but she wants to play the martyr. I did not let her but it’s your choice.

Return to the penthouse and use the terminal to talk to Ludovico. I bluntly told him the prophet was not the murderer. Regardless of your choices, remember NOT to choose the dialog option, “I know who killed Halcyon Helen.” We must formally investigate all suspects for an achievement and we have one left. Exit the conversation.

Lord of Blight

Make Lord of Blight active. We’ve already done a good bit of it. Take Felix and Parvati with you for Engineering and Lockpicking skill checks. Once inside Piraeus Spaceport, you should have two quest markers. Follow the one to Receiver Location. The amplifier alerts in a lavatory. Analyze the book to get Listening Device Receiver.

Now, follow the marker and transition to Freight Storage & Processing creating an auto-save. A security guard stops you momentarily but lets you in once he recognizes you—no need for skill checks. Zip into his office and steal a SLUG Worker Identity Cartridge off a small crate behind the guard who just challenged you. If you’ve been following the WT, it’s a duplicate. If not, you’ll need it shortly.

In the bottom right sector of your map, the Amplifier alerts near a caged Sprat Of Unusual Size (S.O.U.S.). Analyze it. You can kill it or not—nobody minds if you do but make sure you analyze it first. There’s another caged Sprat Of Unusual Size (S.O.U.S.). A SLUG worker says, “Hey, little buddy.” But, she doesn’t object if you kill and loot it.

Just below this second mega-sprat, behind some crates, is a large container that serves as a hidden gambling den. Your companions will comment and you can pick up the named, heavy weapon All In. It’s a decent weapon, I equipped it on Felix although I keep my companions out of combat.

Go up the ramp into Ella Tinsley's office. Before talking to her lockpick the safe and hack the terminal. If you can’t pass the hack skillcheck of 105, pickpocket Ella for the keycard or converse with her and she’ll give it to you.

Reading the messages on the terminal about auto-mechanicals and shipments completes the mission task, Question Ella Tinsley about the Missing Cargo. You can read the outgoing messages on the terminal to learn more about the missing goods. Alternately, speak to Ella for a keycard to access it (less XP, naturally).

I lockpicked the safe, hacked the terminal, pickpocketed Ellie (and got the SLUG Foreman Keycard. Then, I exhausted the conversational options and she gave me another SLUG Foreman Keycard.

Leave through either the upper or lower exit. Follow the quest marker to an auto-mechanical. The Amplifier alerts. Examine the auto-mechanical. It has been altered.

Before you engage the auto-mechanical in conversation, check your engineering and lockpick skills. You want them to be 105 or better. If your engineering is low (even with Parvati’s bonus), this is one use for the Exploration Authority Suit we recently picked up. Its huge engineering bonus should get you over the hump.

Engage the auto-mechanical in conversation. Pass the lockpick and engineering skill checks to get all the information. This completes the mission task Investigate the Shipping Yard Automechanicals. If you lack the engineering and/or lockpicking skill(s). you can still complete the task but the auto-mechanical will turn hostile afterwards.

Keep on any armor or helmet you may have equipped for an engineering bonus and talk to Sedrick. Answer [Engineering] Somebody bypassed the loading mechs’ security system and rewired them to skim random goods. Then, say, The theft *was* random, except for a single shipment.

The listening device was used to pinpoint that shipment. Since Helen had borrowed the device, it appears she was the thief. This could suggest Sedrick had a motive to kill her.

Return to the Penthouse and report back to Ludovico. Tell him Sedrick had no motive and your Sublight Underground Rep will improve slightly. We have now investigated all suspects. Accordingly, as soon as the conversation is over, the following achievement unlocks:

  • Interrogo Totus

Investigated every suspected and reported to Administrator Ludovico.

An Unfinished Accusation

We are now doing the main story quest, An Unfinished Accusation. It is well worthwhile to look at the investigation board. Look at it and press X to examine it more closely. You could have done this at any point but we have now finished all our investigations and the board is complete. Look at the suspects and make sure you exhaust all sub-categories. Do the same for the victims.

There are two additional entries. If you Consider the Atmospheric Complex, you are reminded Eridanos has been on lockdown—you, the inspector, are the only exception. Underneath it is a quick summary of four locations: Prophet’s Retreat, Piraeus Spaceport, Purpleberry Orchard, and the RRD Lab.

More interesting is Consider Additional Evidence. Look at Dr. Amir Zhao’s logs to remind yourself—if you have been following the lore—that a lifeform, unique to Eridanos, was discovered in the Wilderness Exploitation Reserve caverns and that it is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of Rizzo’s Spectrum Brown.

If you Look at the bottle of Spectrum Brown, you can see the corpse of this parasitic lifeform at the bottom. It is “guaranteed to enhance flavor and improve your mood.”

It's now time to name the killer. Any of the five choices will lead to the same outcome. To name the correct killer, option 5, and make it stick; we have to pass an Engineering skill check of 105.

SPOILER: Naming the killer

*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

This is exactly why we picked up the Exploration Authority suit. Its Tech Skills +15 is doubled to +30 if you have the armor master perk. It is best paired with the Night Light (Perception +1, Tech Skills +5) if you picked it up on Gorgon or the Welder’s Goggles (Engineering +15, Perception -1), a reward for the Happiness is a Warm Spaceship side quest on Groundbreaker.

Engineering is influenced by Perception and Temperament. You can increase Perception by drinking a caffeinated beverage. Similarly, you can increase temperament by drinking an alcoholic beverage before the hangover kicks in.

Properly prepared, talk to Ludovico and say, I know who killed Halcyon Helen. As stated earlier, any of the 5 choices, the 4 incorrect ones and the correct one, lead to the same outcome. The distillery is attacked and you have to go rescue Ludovico. This concludes An Unfinished Accusation and initiates the main quest, Naked Hunch although, in our case, it wasn’t a hunch but a deduction based on our engineering skill. Make sure it is active.

Naked Hunch

If you want to see both endings, pop over to the ship to make a manual save there before you continue.

  • Only one ending is required for all achievements so playing the second ending is optional.
  • We will be siding with the candidate who leads to the good ending. The associated quests are The Bird Drug and its follow-on The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World.
  • Siding with the other candidate leads to the bad ending. The associated quests are The Story of Two Disasters and its follow-on For a Breath I Tarry.

Follow the quest marker to the distillery. I took no companions with me. You can enter the main door but you do not need to. In fact, regardless of which story branch you select, we’ll be entering the distillery through this entrance later in the game.

If you do enter at this time, you can do some looting but you can’t access the interior of the refinery. Of note, a room to the right as you enter, has all flavors of Rizzo’s Spectrum vodka. If you lockpick a door, skill check 105, you can find the named, unique heavy weapon, Recharge through a hole in the wall. In the upper right corner of your map, you can find Helen’s monogramed cigarette lighter and a replica of her gun.

Whether or not you explore the front, when you’re ready, head to an elevator on the side. Activate the intercom in front of a large, clouded plate glass window. It becomes transparent. You trigger a cut scene. The Naked Hunch quest concludes and you unlock:

  • Alive And Kicking (And Shooting Too!)

Discovered the biggest secret in the aetherwave industry.

You must decide whether to side with or against Ludovico. Siding with Ludovico is a little easier and faster but leads to the ‘bad’ ending. Siding against him requires a bit more work but leads to the good ending.

Turning against Ludovico results in his activating a detonator to obliterate the facility and you with it. This activates the main quest Escape.

Escape

Follow the quest marker. Mindful of dangerous steam, use a lever to unseal a door. You meet up with your partner. Use a science skill check in the dialog. You agree to reconnoiter in the penthouse. Turn right and climb up a ladder. You are back outside.

Go to the penthouse. Exhaust the conversational choices to learn the full story of the murder. Make sure to use Persuade, skill check 45, to get the Needler.

Science Weapon 3 of 3: The Needler

Acquiring all 3 science weapons unlocks:

  • Spectrum Needler Buddy

Acquired Spectrum Gatling, The Needler, and Udder Buddy.

Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (55)

2 guidesGuide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (56)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (57)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (58)

This concludes Escape and initiates the main story quest The Bird Drug. Make sure it’s active.

The Bird Drug

We need two items for an antiparasitic cure—Essence of Sprat and an Egg Pod. Go to Piraeus Spaceport. It has been overrun by enemies. They don’t pose much of a threat. You should have two quest markers fairly close to one another. Enter Freight Storage & Processing creating an auto-save. Follow the marker to Sedrick and enlist his help as an optional task.

Now, go to Ellie’s office and pick up Essence of Sprat from her desk. It was not there, previously, when we talked to her otherwise we would have picked it up then. Ellie’s in the office. It’s not required you talk to her but she has a couple of lines of dialog regarding the current situation.

Fortunately, the egg pod was available when we were at the caves underneath the Abandoned Bunker. Picking it up then saves us from making a long, arduous trip out there.

Since we now have both ingredients, return to the penthouse and manufacture the antiparasitic. There’s a centrifuge on a table to the right as soon as you enter. Ideally, get your science skill at or above 105 using armor and helmets with bonuses if your base skill isn’t enough.

Pass a science skill check of 105 to calibrate the device. This will, automatically, create the antiparasitic and ensure it is of the highest quality to eradicate all symbiotes.

Take the elevator and exit the hotel. I did not take any companions with me. Follow the quest marker to the Pilothouse mindful of the enemies you encounter after you cross the bridge. Enter the Navigation Deck. Walk straight forward to the PHAETON Terminal—the one we repaired during the PHAETON’s Monster faction quest.

Interact with PHAETON and choose Disperse this instead. After a cut scene, The Bird Dog main quest concludes and you unlock:

  • The Rock Or The Hard Place

Chose to either infect or cure Eridanos.

The Beast that shouted love at the heart of the world

The new main quest is The Beast that shouted love at the heart of the world. Make sure it’s active. I took no companions with me. There’s some heavy combat and companions are at risk of perma-death.

If you’re not playing on supernova, companions may be helpful—choose your favorites. The less risky path requires a hack skill check of 115. Vicar Max and/or SAM are useful in that regard.

Follow the quest marker to the distillery. Enter through the main entrance. There will be enemies inside the main entrance.

If this is the first time here, do some looting if you’re so inclined, but its not necessary. A room to the right as you enter, has all flavors of Rizzo’s Spectrum vodka. If you lockpick a door, skill check 105, you can find the named, unique heavy weapon, Recharge through a hole in the wall. In the upper right corner of your map, you can find Helen’s monogramed cigarette lighter and a replica of her gun.

When you’re ready, follow the quest marker to the elevator. On your map, it’s marked on the bottom right sector. The room you enter has a workbench and two doors. There are no enemies when you enter. If you unlock the right door with a lockpick skill of around 70, you enter another room with no enemies but you can see some through a grate.

There is a terminal that can be hacked with a skill check of around 115. After hacking, choose, Increase Pressure Levels. The enemies in the next room will perish. If you want the XP, feel free to defeat the enemies yourself rather than by trickery.

Other enemies will come so be alert. Also, be wary of hazardous steam. When you’re ready to proceed unbar the door and/or go through the left door of the first room. Check your map. The marker is on an elevator on the right side.

You can take multiple paths. No one path has a clear advantage over the others so you might as well take the most direct route. I chose to completely eradicate all enemies on floor 2/3 and then took the elevator.

The first chamber in front of the elevator is free of enemies but, after that, stay on your toes. You can always use the elevator if you need to retreat. Eventually, you make it to a room with a vending machine. The quest marker is on the door.

There’s a fight coming up with a boss and a number of minions. You may want to consume caffeinated & sugary beverages, carbohydrates and meat edibles, and any other buffs that you’d like. Then, enter the door triggering a cut scene.

After the cut scene (time spent in the cut scene does not count against the duration of your buffs), you enter the boss fight. It’s just a more durable monster than others in the game so use whatever tactics suit you best.

If you’ve got good hacking skills, you can use the Steam Distribution Control terminals at each of the four corners. Choose Access Machinery Controls to create hazards that will kill the boss for you.

Personally, I prefer just going to town with my favorite weapon. I concentrate on the boss and try to kill it as quickly as possible. The spawnlings are annoying but are more help than hindrance. Because I had the second tier perk, Harvester, that restores 15% health per kill; I used killing them rather than the inhaler to keep my health up. When you kill the boss, you unlock:

  • You Have Selected Regicide!

    Killed the Slug Queen.

1 guideGuide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (67)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (68)Guide for The Outer Worlds (Windows) (69)

Check the remains of the boss to find Nova Burst, the unique, named long gun used as the murder weapon. You’ll also find administrator’s finery and administrator’s access card. Speak to Administrator Harwell at the far right of your map in the upper corner. Don’t kill him. He’ll give access to an elevator that’ll give you a bit of a short cut leaving the building—it’s the one you used earlier during the Naked Hunch mission. You’ll have to go the long way round but it’s to the upper left of the big room where you had the boss fight. As you exit, be prepared to see a few unremarkable enemies.

Captain, Go Home

We’re now doing the last Eridanos main story mission. Make sure Captain, Go Home is active. There are three quest markers. The ones on Sedrick and Helen are optional. They’re close together. Conversational choices don’t matter and Sedrick’s conversation is very short.

For the Sunburn achievement, we need to dumb ourselves down to below average intelligence. For that, we need:

  • One bottle of Spectrum Vodka Brown
  • Three syringes of Adrena-Time

These consumables are plentiful on Eridanos. Ensure you obtain the necessary quantities of both items before you leave.

Afterwards, fast travel to your ship and speak to ADA to unlock:

  • Murder on Eridanos

Completed Murder on Eridanos on any difficulty.

You have now completed Murder on Eridanos. We'll next get a couple of achievement out of the way and, then, conclude the game. If you're on a different path and this completes your game, congratulations.
